The Chicks

One last podcast for 2013! None of that cheesy "best of the year" stuff here, because I'm honestly still processing so much of the music that popped up in the last twelve months. Hell, I'm still catching up on several decades worth of stuff, if y'all really want to get down to it.

The Mummies

Dipping my toes in slightly more contemporary waters than the last podcast, but (obviously) not completely - trying to overcome my irrational writer's block to put together more record reviews for the forthcoming Dynamite Hemorrhage zine has the benefit of keeping my fingers on a relatively current pulse.

Unintentionally '80s-leaning this time around (and even more so than usual). Anarcho-punk, minimal synth-wave, children of Nuggets, Kiwi pop jangle - it's all here.

The Particles

Hey y'all! Here's the second go-round of the strictly podcast version of the show. Thanks so much to everyone who has left words of encouragement on here or dropped me an email or generally helped motivate me to keep this thing going. It's great to still have an outlet for sharing all the amazing music I'm still stumbling across...

Exciting things on the horizon: My pal Jay over at Dynamite Hemorrhage is in the process of putting together a print zine covering some of the weird & wonderful music both of us happen to be fond of & he's asked me to contribute. I'm completely tickled to be a part of it & hoping that it might get me to make good on my promise to do music writings more regularly. Stay tuned, etc.

Bona Dish

As promised, here's my first attempt at relocating the radio show to a "recorded in my room with a shitty built-in laptop microphone" podcast format (sorry if it sounds like I recorded my vocal breaks straight to an answering machine). Hopefully y'all will dig it! If nothing else, it's going to free me to play more songs with naughty words without having to dive over the control board to fade them out at the appropriate time, so there's that.

Thirteen in '13 (so far)

The Woolen Men

Over the past few months, I've been doing some writing for the Australian-based music website Collapse Board, under the watchful eye of one Mr. Everett True. And until recently, I've had so much of my attention wrapped up in preparation for a weekly radio show, which didn't leave me as much time as I would have liked to put some words on the digital page about so many of those same records that I was excitedly spinning week after week. Hopefully that's all going to be changing now, though.

This is the my most recent piece for Collapse Board - I'm always so hesitant to put together "best of whatever" lists, because there's inevitably so much that slips my mind or things that I don't discover until relatively long after the fact, etc. So don't read this as any kind of comprehensive account of the best releases of the first half of 2013, but rather just thirteen musical items from January to July that you should give a listen. Read it (complete with audio/video samples) over here!

And if you're interested in playing catch-up with some other things I've written for Collapse Board more or less recently, I have a somewhat-regular feature in which I focus on 7" singles or demos (either cassette or digital) that have gotten me psyched:

Demo of the Week | Funsuck

Demos of the Week | Moon & Negation

Demos of the Week | Love Cuts & Tweens

Demos of the Week | Juniper Rising & Salt Flat

Single of the Week | La Luz – Damp Face EP (Burger) & Call Me In The Day 7” (Water Wing)

Single of the Week | Priests – Radiation/Personal Planes 7″ (Sister Polygon)

Single of the Week | Mil Mascaras – Fuzz EP (Hozac)

And a similarly non-comprehensive "best of 2012" list:

Lady-centric sounds commissioned by So Tough! So Cute!

Since I'm trying to make a conscious effort to keep this blog regularly updated, I realized how many things I've written or contributed to in the past few months that I've completely neglected to post here. So I'm going to try to go backwards a little bit & fix that.

Here's a perfect example: I mentioned this on Facebook last month & for whatever reason, I totally forgot to post it on the blog, but Daniel from the excellent Sweden-based So Tough! So Cute! blog wrote to me awhile ago & asked if I'd have any interest in putting together a downloadable guest mix of lady-centric sounds to be featured on the site. Uh, duh - I was all over that assignment. And miraculously, I somehow managed to show some degree of restraint & cut things down to 26 songs. You can check the whole thing out here, if you need some more ladies, women & grrrls in your life (you know you do).

Brave the Climate of Doom (an '80s post-punk mix)

Another mix that was put together based on a theme suggested by a financial backer to my show during WMUA's annual fund drive! This one was commissioned by a listener named Parker - the comments that were handed to me by the person answering the phones that night just said "Gang of Four, the Fall, '80s post-punk", so I kind of connected the dots from there. Not surprisingly, it's heavy on contributions from noisemakers based in the UK, but there's also some representation from other corners of the globe (like New Zealand, Germany & uh, Milwaukee).

Download link below the tracklisting.

Reflect What You Are (an all-covers mix)

So it's that time of year again in which I share with you, dear listener, mixes that were commissioned by people out there not entirely unlike yourselves in return for financial contributions designed to help keep WMUA on the air. Let's just say that some of the themes that were pitched to me this time around were more engaging than others (and by that, I mean that most of the people who were presented with the opportunity to dictate the theme of their mix just essentially said "surprise me").

I was having trouble thinking of a really good theme for one of these unspecified mixes, so I decided to be kind of lazy & do an all-covers mix, with the caveat that I wasn't going to include any "ironic" covers - basically, I stuck to covers of songs that I was into in their original forms. Just wait though, because there will be a companion mix of covers of pure cheese forthcoming, if only because I needed to find a way to use the Violent Femmes' cover of Culture Club's "Do You Really Want to Hurt Me"...
