The Cardboards

You have twice as many opportunities to read my words in print this month, as Bull Tongue Review #4 has just escaped the presses & arrived in my mailbox (and likely other people's, too). I take on the semi-recently published book All Ages: The Rise & Fall of Portland Punk Rock, 1977-1981 & if there's such a thing as constructive shit-talking, that's essentially what my contribution is this time around.  And as usual, there's a new Maximum Rocknroll on the streets, which, yeah, has my monthly column, but more importantly, features an interview with the Minneapolis Uranium Club Band, who have pretty much smoked anything else to happen musically this year. Be a champ & pick 'em both up.

Okay, seriously, y'all - who's got the Stateside hook-up on those Vital Idles cassettes? The current dollar-to-pound conversion rate in conjunction with the fact that contemporary UK DIY is generally killing it lately is really hurting my heart.

Deep Freeze Mice

Despite completely burnt out on social media lately & trying to minimize the amount of time that I spend engaging with it, this month's podcast might include more new releases that any other one that I've done so far this year (although this is mere speculation). Maybe it's an increased ability to focus when I'm not drowning in digital clutter? We'll see how long it lasts.

Also, a minor correction: contrary to what I say in the podcast, the Choo Choo Trains song is actually called "Things You Do", rather than "The One I Love".

Oil Tasters

I'm really psyched to say that I've recently been coaxed into writing a monthly column for Maximum Rocknroll & you can read the very first installment in glorious print in the current issue (#386!), which features really great interviews with Flesh World & the director of a new documentary on the Slits, among other things. Look forward to examinations of some of my favorite post-punk obscurities from decades past & musings on more recent releases that you should probably seek out if you're not a dummy. Unknown Gender

Sorry to anyone who might have contacted or written to me in the past few weeks & hasn't heard back from me yet - I got hit by a car while I was biking to work exactly one day after I posted my last podcast & I was in an incredibly scattered, Vicodin-induced haze for a bit. I'm finally getting around to playing catch-up, so bear with me! Also, stay tuned for a couple of new secret-for-now projects that I'm currently working on, one of which would greatly benefit from y'all tipping me off to any new music you're making. Talk to me.

Self Control

Some of y'all have probably noticed that all of the links on this blog to stream or download any of my previous podcasts have been broken & generally non-functioning for the past few weeks. Basically, my old file host (Divshare) had some sort of total network meltdown & all of the shows that I had archived there for the past three or four years were completely wiped out. Thanks to two kind souls by the names of Brett & Jay, I've been able to repost a good chunk of the episodes that were lost (on a different file host & with a brand new streaming player!), but there's still quite a few that I'm missing because I'm a dummy & didn't back anything up in a non-cloud format. So, if any of y'all might happen to have any old downloaded shows that you could share with me, please get in touch at the email address listed on the sidebar & I'll let you know what pieces I'm still needing to collect! I'll even make you a mixtape or something for your troubles.

With that said, here's a new episode! Fuck the cloud.

Do y'all have a copy of the second issue of Dynamite Hemorrhage yet? I would hope so, but if not, hop over to that link & pick one up from Jay while the getting is still good. Words stolen from the man himself, regarding the contents of said zine (including my contributions of a bunch of record reviews & a piece on one of my perennial favorite topics, namely female-fronted punk/post-punk):

- An interview and career-spanning retrospective with BILL DIREEN, the New Zealand-based musical iconoclast and creator of some of the most weird and wonderful underground pop music of the last 35 years. Great old photos of Vacuum, Six Impossible Things and more - with Direen's take on his many recordings, bands and general outlook on creation & creativity.

- Tim Warren from Crypt Records, on the eve of two new volumes of the mind-destroying "BACK FROM THE GRAVE" 60s punk compilations, takes us through in profanity-strewn detail how he's been putting these comps together since 1983, and the pain the man has endured to make sure you and I get to hear some of the most raw and rare rocknroll chaos of all time...!

- Interview with bedroom lo-fi pop savants HONEY RADAR, currently making many short, abrasive and lovely mini-masterpieces out of Philadelphia

- Interview with NOTS, raw and slashing earworm punk band from Memphis

- KING TEARS MORTUARY, Sydney, Australia's answer to the question "What would a mix of C86, KBD punk and The Gories sound like?"

- Erika Elizabeth's overview of lost and neglected female-fronted punk and post-punk bands and records you've never heard of

- The Layman's Guide to 1970s Jamaican DUB - an overview of wild, weird and wacked dub reggae created during its peak era, along with ten essential dub recordings, explored

- Interviews with Jon Savage and Stuart Baker on the new PUNK 45 series of archival 70s punk reissues

- 87 record reviews

- 15 book reviews

- Advertisements from today's top hitmaking labels

Also, just saying - I will gladly accept any/all birthday gifts of rare off-kilter post-punk singles & wild female-fronted ruckus that y'all want to send me...

Dow Jones & the Industrials

What you get this time around (excerpt): a bunch of songs from 2014 that didn't show up on my doorstep until 2015 rolled around, some classic snotty KBD gems, one of my favorite power-pop songs ever from the Australian/New Zealand axis, bizarre French new wave, giddy Swiss & Austrian post-punk, brand new jangling pop from both American coasts & the sound of me in the throes of a cold and/or a bout with some horrendous seasonal allergies.
